DLR German Aerospace Center
DLR German Aerospace Center is the German research center for aeronautics, transport and energy as well as security and defence research. Founded in 1969 in the Federal Republic of Germany. Its branches are located in many cities in Germany, but its headquarters is in Cologne.
In its work, DLR Space Administration concentrates on a number of eminent projects and missions in space research. In consultation with science, industry, and the European Space Agency (ESA) it implements key national and international projects covering all core areas of space research.
Climate, mobility and technology are changing globally. DLR uses the expertise of its 11,000 emplyees in 54 research institutes and facilities to develop solutions to these challenges. DLR develops technologies for a sustainable future. By transferring technology, DLR contributes to strengthening Germany’s position as a prime location for research and industry.
During ERC we will have an rare opportunity to see the MMX rover and learn more about its coming mission.
The Japanese space agency JAXA’s MMX space probe will study the two martian moons Deimos and Phobos in detail from orbit and collect material samples from Phobos for the first time during a short landing manoeuvre. It will also carry the MMX rover from DLR and CNES and set it down on Phobos. The expected findings should help us to better understand the formation of the martian moons and the planets in the Solar System. The ambitious project is expected to be launched from the Japanese spaceport Tanegashima in 2026.
The MMX rover will fulfil several tasks on Phobos: Firstly, it will provide important findings in preparation for the landing of the mother craft. Secondly, it will analyse the surface composition and texture at selected locations.
